Compiling a CV

 

Did you know that in most cases an employer will take just 10 to 20 seconds to read through your CV and if your CV does not stand out and attract the reader's immediate attention then your chances of obtaining an interview are considerably reduced if not eliminated? Sounds very harsh but that’s the way it is

 

Remember a company gets CV’s sent to them every day so yours has got to stand out. What an employer really wants to know is why they should invite you for an interview. So when compiling your CV Remember the CV should make an employer want to invite you for an interview

 

Writing a CV

 

A CV (curriculum vitae) is a short list of facts about you and your work history, skills and experience. A good CV is essential when looking for work and it is worth spending time getting it right so it sells you to an employer.

 

Your CV should:

  • Be neat, typed if possible and to the best standard you can achieve in content and layout

  • Be short, two or three maximum sheets of A4 paper is normally enough

  • Use the best quality paper you can afford  ideally 100/gm or 110gm

  • Commence work history with the most recent first

  • List achievements an

  • Use bold headings with your Job Title above that of the company put dates to the right

  • Not be crammed, but use white space

  • Be positive, it should emphasize  your achievements, strengths, successes No’s of staff Managed etc  and how you have contributed to your employers making a profit (add figures to support facts whenever you can and use positive action words, for example: ‘consulting’, ‘negotiating’, ‘managing’ ‘supervising and so on)

  • Use bullet points to describe your duties etc

  • Keep paragraphs to a maximum of 5 /6 lines to make it easy to read  

  • Be checked for spellings mistakes, punctuation, and typing error’s  

  • Make a good impression, this means presenting the facts about yourself in a clear positive way.
